WORLD T.B. DAY

The World Tuberculosis Day, falling on 24th March each year, was celebrated on by the Department of Community Medicine at the Medical College, HIHT. March 24th commemorates the day in 1882 when Dr Robert Koch, a German physician, astounded the scientific community by announcing that he had discovered the cause of tuberculosis, the TB bacillus. Celebrations were also held at the Rural Health Training Centers (RHTC) at Rajeev Nagar & Thano with a key objective to raise public awareness about problems & solutions related to TB and to support the TB-control efforts worldwide. The theme for World TB Day Campaign 2012 was 'Stop TB in my lifetime; Call for a world free of TB'.

RHTC, Rajeev Nagar oganised a talk amongst the general community members educating them about the symptoms, treatment (Free DOTS Therapy) and prevention of TB through posters & health education material. The community members were encouraged to make use of the facilities at the RHTC, HIMS & CHC (Doiwala). A rally was also organized by the MBBS students for generating awareness about importance of the day with slogans 'Jan-Jan ne ye thana hai...TB rog mitana hai' and 'DOTS apnao…TB Bhagao'.

The DCM organized a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) at RHTC, Thano for general awareness on TB. The members of the community used the opportunity to clarify their doubts about the disease with the HIMS Team.

 

 

HIMOTSAV-2012
(The Cultural Festival of HIHT)

The much awaited cultural festival of HIHT celebrated as "HIMOTSAV-2012" was held in the College Auditorium from 16th to 18th February 2012. It was for the first time that a joint cultural festival of HIHT family was organized where all faculty and staff of Medical/ Paramedical /Nursing/ and other departments of HIHT as well as the students from Medical/ Paramedical /Nursing participated together on one stage.

The festival was inaugurated by the Hon'ble Vice Chancellor of the HIHT University and Member Presidential Body, Dr. Vijay Dhasmana on 16th evening by lamp lighting. The Dean, HIHT University and other dignitaries accompanied him for lamp lighting.

Preliminary rounds of this versatile cultural festival like Male Solo Songs , Skits & Solo Dance performances were held separately for Students (Medical, Paramedical and Nursing ) and for the Faculty / staff category on 16th February while on 17th, preliminary rounds for Female Solo Songs, Duets and Group Dance Performances were held. The programme was witnessed and thoroughly enjoyed by all the faculty members, staff and their families, and the student fraternity of all the colleges extending up to four hours each day. Best three performances of all events were selected for the finals as decided by a panel of Judges for each event. Final rounds were again performed on 18th evening in a much delighted way with perfection. Final day events were also complemented by the fancy Dress competition for all and some melodious performances by invited distinguished faculty singers and others.

Mr. Manish from Nursing won the first while Rahul Rawatbagged the second prize in Male Solo Song competition for students. In the faculty/staff category, Mr. Saumik Mitra bagged the first prize while Mr. Pradeep Sharma won the second prize. Ms. Deepa Kumari from Nursing bagged the first and Ms. Ruhi Esha from Medical won the second prize in Female Solo Song, students category while Mrs. Tulika, was given consolation prize from faculty/staff category.
In Duet song category from students, Ms. Deepa Kumari & Mr. Manish from Nursing got the first prize while Mr. Bipin & Mr. Shirman got the second. Consolation prizes were given in Duet song category for faculty /staff to Mr. Pradeep Sharma & Mrs. Tulika and Mr. Krishan & Mr. Vijay.

Solo dance performances were again mesmerizing in which Ms. Neha Bala from Paramedical got first prize while Mr. Sandeep again from paramedical got the second in students category. Meanwhile, consolation prize was given to Dr. Meenu Gupta in faculty/staff group for her memorable performance. Group dances by Ms. Shivani & Group from Paramedical on 'Mahisasur sangram' was adjudged to be the best, while 'Bhangra' presented by Ms. Ravneet & Group from Nursing stood second.

Stunning performance by Medical students, Mr. Piyush & Group in Skit 'Reed ki Haddi' was declared best in students category and 'Female foeticide' the other remarkable performance by Ms. Asha & Group from Nursing, declared second.

Hilarious fancy dress competition, as witnessed by the audience, made Mr. Rachit acted as 'Hanuman' from Paramedical the best and 'Garwhali girl' acted by Ms. Sonia from Paramedical as next best performance.

In Anchoring, Mr. Yogesh Ahuja from Medical, Ms. Jyoti Godiyal from Nursing and Ms. Gazala from Paramedical bagged the second & third prize. Mr. Nitesh Dixit, Medical student, stole the show by his jokes and mimicry at the end, for which he was awarded with a consolation prize.

The Hon'ble Vice Chancellor congratulated all winners and awarded the Prizes at the end. The three day programme ended with vote of thanks proposed by the Chairperson, Organizing Committee to all the participants, winners, dignitaries, audience, orchestra party, various other depts. engaged in preparations and HIHT for the financial help. The chairperson also thanked all the committee members for their commitment and support in organizing the event.

2nd National Conference of Society of Biological Scientists of India

Himalayan Institute of Medical Sciences, HIHT University organized the 2nd National Conference of Society of Biological Scientists of India from 27th to 29th January 2012, under the able guidance of Dr. Vijendra D. Chauhan & Dr. S.L. Jethani, who were organizing Secretary & Co-organizing Secretary. The theme of the conference was "Health Challenges & Opportunities in the New Millennium". Padamshree Dr. A N Purohit (Ex. Vice Chancellor HNB Garhwal University, Srinagar) Chief Guest for the conference, during his address, expressed his concern over the reducing research activities among youth and the increasing burden of different diseases in the community.

Dr. Vijay Dhasmana, Hon'ble Vice Chancellor HIHT University, congratulated all the participants of the conference and appreciated the research work done by them in different areas.
Thirty-seven delegates attended the workshop on Research Methodology on the first day of the conference followed by CME and Scientific Session on the second and third day of the conference.

Nearly 350 delegates from all over the country viz. Pondicherry, Delhi, Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand etc., participated in the conference. During the CME sessions, eminent researchers like Dr. B C Harinath, Dr. T K Bose, Dr. Dhiman, Dr. Vijendra Chauhan, Dr. Arun Gupta, Dr. Rahul Bansal, Dr. Saurabh Varshney and Dr. Kesarvani shared their research experience and expertise with the delegates. The key-note Speaker at the CME, Padamshree recipient Prof. S.C. Manchanda, delivered a talk on "Holistic Medicine - The future of Healthcare".

The delegates gave scientific presentations on various topics related to health challenges, both in oral and poster sessions. Dr. Dinesh S.M. from Karnataka won the "Young Scientist Award". Awards for best faculty presentation, best oral presentation by post graduates, and best oral presentation by under-graduates and best poster presentation were also given.

 

63rd Republic Day Celebrations

HIHT University celebrated the 63rd Republic Day in a very impressive and majestic way. Dr. Vijay Dhasmana, Vice Chancellor HIHT University, hoisted the flag followed by the National Anthem. Dean Dr. V. Chauhan, Medical Superintendent Dr. S. L. Jethani, Dr. Prakash Keshaviah, Principal Nursing College Dr. Ratna Prakash, all deputy deans, deputy MS, and other dignitaries, faculty members, officials, staff and students of all courses were present to participate in this memorable event. Parade of paramedical students, nursing students, medical students, engineering deptt. and security guards saluted the national flag.

Cultural program started with the children of Vidya School singing a patriotic song. Patriotic solo and group songs were presented by students of nursing college, paramedical college and medical college.

The whole ceremony was appreciated, and it instilled patriotic emotions in all. The event was followed by distribution of sweets.


Health Research Methods Workshop at HIHT University

A two and a half day workshop on Health Research Methods was organized by the Research Committee of HIHT University from 13th to 15th Jan. 2012 with guest faculty from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA. The faculty included Ms. Brenda Gillespie, Ph.D., Associate Director of the Center for Statistical Consultation and Research , Ms. Kathy Welch, M.S., M.P.H., Statistical Staff Specialist & Dr. Panduranga Rao, M.D., M.P.H. , Associate Professor, Departments of Medicine and Nephrology. The workshop was held in the College of Nursing and included lectures, hands-on computerized data entry and analysis, small group discussions, critical reading of assigned papers, critique of some HIHT Research projects and practical participation in a clinical trial. Topics covered included types of study designs, data collection, descriptive statistical tests, regression analysis, survival analysis, clinical trials and ethical issues. A workbook containing the course material was provided to each of the 44 participants from 16 different departments of HIMS and the College of Nursing. Participants filled out a feed-back questionnaire which was subjected to computerized data analysis and presented to the participants. The analysis indicated that the participants found the workshop to be very beneficial, especially the hands-on computer exercises, and wanted further instruction in Health Research Methods. Certificates were presented to the faculty and to the participants at the conclusion of the workshop.

Dr. Renu Dhasmana Receives International Recognition
for her Innovative Leadership in Nursing

On Wednesday, November 3, 2011, Dr. Renu Dhasmana was one of five individuals in the world who received Honorary Membership in Sigma Theta Tau, International Nursing Honor Society. The award was presented at the Biannual Conference of Sigma Theta Tau International in Dallas, Texas, USA. Since she was not present at the Conference, the award was delivered here in India at the Himalayan College of Nursing, and presented to her at a special function with her Faculty. The words: Sigma Theta Tau are Greek words meaning: "Love", "Courage", and "Honor". "The vision of Sigma Theta Tau International is to create a global community of nurses who lead in using knowledge, scholarship, service and learning to improve health of the world's people".

This honor is bestowed by Sigma Theta Tau on non-nursing individuals who have demonstrated superior achievements that have contributed to the advancement of nursing and health care at the national or global levels. Dr. Renu has guided the Himalayan College of Nursing from its inception in 1996. Her future visions include: implementing a Collaboration Model that formally unites Faculty Responsibilities in the College of Nursing with Nursing Practice Responsibilities in the Hospital and strengthening Nursing Faculty Careers with Ph.Ds in Nursing. The Himalayan College of Nursing is in the initial stages of establishing a Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International here in India.

WORLD AIDS DAY, 1st DECEMBER -2011

The department of Community Medicine, HIMS, observed the World AIDS Day on 1st December-2011. The theme "Getting to Zero" signifies Zero New HIV Infections, Zero Discrimination, Zero AIDS Related Deaths. A seminar was organized at the department of community medicine on the world AIDS Day 2011 focussing on the latest trend of the infection and NACP IV strategies to combat the situation.

Dr. S.D Kandpal, Professor and Head of the department expressed his views about reducing discrimination against people living with HIV/AIDS and how HIV infection & AIDS death can be reduced and also briefed the department about the recent data of HIV prevalence & other related statistics.

The department also organized ASHA orientation at Urban Health Training Center Rishikesh. The undergraduate medical students were oriented about the importance of World AIDS Day theme by the faculty members of the department. Red ribbons were distributed to all the Medical & Paramedical faculty and staff of HIHT as well as community members to show their solidarity, care and concern to HIV/AIDS patients as well as to remind others of the need for their support and commitment. Rallies were taken out by the undergraduate students in the Rural Health Training Centre Rajeev Nagar and Thano as an awareness drive to inform the community about ways of preventing the spread of HIV infection and reducing the discrimination against those who are infected.

NATIONAL CONFERENCE OF INDIAN COLLEGE OF ANAESTHESIOLOGISTS
& 1st UTTARACON 2011

Third National Conference of Indian College of Anaesthesiologists and Ist UTTARACON 2011 was held at Himalayan Institute of Medical Sciences, Dehradun from 19th to 20th November2011.

The chief aim of the conference was to critically review which of the commonly-held beliefs in anaesthesia are grounded in evidence. The conference facilitated learning, networking, and professional growth opportunities as evidenced by a high-calibre and high-quality past edition.

The scientific program included lectures, symposium, debates, panel discussions, free paper & poster presentations. There was an excellent range of international and national speakers and topics. The post graduate students received an insight of the current practices in anaesthesia. There were free paper session, post graduate quiz and poster presentation to encourage them. The serene beautiful and picturesque campus gave a perfect environment to an excellent literary festival.

15th Annual Mahasamadhi Day of H.H. Dr. Swami Rama

The Mahasamadhi Day of H.H. Dr. Swami Rama, the founder of Himalayan Institute Hospital Trust (HIHT), was observed on 13th November, 2011. The prominent dignitaries, devotees and guests who paid obeisance to swamiji included the Chancellor of HIHT University Mahamandleshwar Swami Veda Bharti Ji, Uttarakhand Lokayukt Shri M.M. Ghilidiyal, Shri Yogendra Mohan, Shri B.L. Kothiwal, Shri Rashpal Malhotra, Shri Deepak Vohra, Swami Anand Ji, Swami Jnaneshvara Bharati, Dr. John Clark and many more.

The programme started with the lamp-lighting ceremony in front of the portrait of H.H. Swami Rama and floral tributes were paid by the Chief Guest, H.H. Swami Awdheshanand Giri Ji Maharaj of Juna Akhara alongwith Mahamandleshwar Swami Veda Bharti Ji and members of the Presidential Body. The Nursing Students melodiously sang the Guru Vandana. Chief Guest and all the dignitaries were given warm welcome with bouquets. Dr. Vijendra Chauhan, Secretary of HIHT delivered the welcome address.

The programme progressed with distribution of Swami Rama Scholarship to 375 deserving and meritorious students from various schools of Uttarakhand. A total amount of Rs. 36 lacs this year was distributed towards the Swami Rama Scholarship.

On the occasion, faculty and non-teaching staff were felicitated with the Best Employee Award 2011 in recognition of their sincere services and contribution given to the organization.

The Chief Guest presented the Swami Rama Humanitarian Award to Divya Prem Sewa Mission Niyas, Haridwar for providing commendable services for the past several years to leprosy patients. Shri Ashish Gautam the President of the Mission received the award.

A book of H. H. Swami Rama Ji titled "Sadhna the Path to Enlightenment: Yoga the Scared cience, Volume II" and "Desk Calendar - 2012" of HIHT containing beautiful quotes of Swami Rama were released on the occasion by Swami Veda Bharti Ji, Anand Swami Ji and Swami Jnaneshvara Bharati.

The Mahasamadhi Day concluded in the evening by mesmerizing Bhajan Sandhya of Pandita Tripti Mukherjee, Hindustani classical vocalist and illustrious disciple of Sangeet Martand Pandit Jasraj.
